If I asked you what’s chalk made of? Most of you would say Calcium Carbonate, which is correct, but it’s much more interesting than just being a form of Limestone. Chalk is actually formed from the accumulation of millions of plates from “Coccolithophores”, which are single celled algae-like nannofossils, in very deep marine conditions. The term for the geological time period the “Cretaceous” is named after the Latin word “Creta” which means chalk. Chert and flint nodules can also been found in chalk along with other fossils macro and micro fossils.
