awkwardanime: Awkward Anime Episode 3: Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi (Spirited Away) Spirited Away. What can I say about this movie that already hasn’t been said? This was the first ever Japanese movie I laid eyes on (I’m talking about it like a partner or sommat haha) and I was taken aback by the sheer thought gone into the backgrounds, the characters, the creatures. When I think of this movie, I don’t think of a deep emotional roller-coaster, but rather a fun scary adventure where curiosity did NOT kill the cat. Don’t get me wrong, there are many emotional meanings in this film, but as spoken from the mouth of famous renowned Director, Hayao Miyazaki: “I wanted to make a movie they (young girls) could enjoy. That is why I started this film, and that is my true purpose. “I want my young friends to live like that, and I think they too, have such a wish” Hayao Miyazaki made sure that the world knew that this project wasn’t to be focused on the animation, instead seeing it as he says “using an ordinary man’s eyes”. Funnily enough, I don’t think of the plot when I think of this movie. The visuals and how something can look so simple yet unbelievable at the same time. The design of these gods that come to this huge functioning bath house where it’s just life moving forward. “I reduced the eye candy as much as possible and made it simple.” Simple?! Wow. He believes this is simple. The movie puts across Miyazaki’s message beautifully well, which is to light that spark in young girls minds that curiosity is a way of growing up and that even at the tender age of 10, you can begin an adventure that stays with you forever. Chihiro was perfectly normal. I say that in the best way possible. Miyazaki himself stated that “it’s very important to make it plain and unexaggerated” Everyone starts out plain. Everyone. It’s that fear inside Chihiro in the opening scenes that led her to try and stay by the car. With fear however, comes curiosity. I have a fear of spiders. Always have.Yet I force myself to go closer to the insects to try and overcome this. Chihiro’s curiosity was ignited from her fear. Throughout the entire movie, she is scared. Life is scary. This huge world is fearsome. That fear brings out our bravery, courage and lights up that curiosity. This movie puts out that message. Curiosity did NOT kill the cat. The sheer originality within the animation is simply breathtaking. Simply breathtaking. The number of “Gods” or “Spirits” (Miyazaki refers to them as Gods) that had me gawking at the screen because of the level of detail and imagination put into them is too many to count. My favourite scene? The market lighting up and the spirits coming out, leading to the beautiful shot of the bathhouse as everyone wants to relax. I will always love and appreciate this film. Thank you, Hayao Miyazaki for introducing anime to me. Thank you, for showing me that “Anime” can create better stories than Westerns. Spirited Away. It blew me away with its designs and originality. Until next time, remember to eat those little trees More to come! Follow and share I would appreciate it, thank you all! ❤️ Awkward Anime Episode 2 To the dreamers: “Everyone starts out plain”Stay curious! -- source link
