If you ask me who my favorite superhero is, 9 times out of 10, I’ll say She-Hulk or Hellboy. But if you ask me what superhero has been a fixture in my life the longest, you’d probably be surprised by my answer. One of the earliest memories I have is of going to the Shaw library with my Granny one hot summer day when I was about 4 or 5, and sitting in on an event in the Kids section about why reading was fun. Out of nowhere, music started playing, and Spider-Man lept out from behind a door to tell us that reading was the best kind of superpower, because it made you smarter and gave you the tools to overcome anything. The Spider-Man was kind and silly, and just wanted to make sure we were all happy and excited to learn to read, and it definitely made me curious about trying. As I got older, this memory became one of my favorite stories to tell, simply because of its weirdness, and how endearing the person wearing the Spidey suit was. From the library, to the newspaper strips, to the cartoons, to the movies, the webhead’s always been a part of my life. Thanks, Mr. Ditko, for helping to create a character that motivated a small, shy kid from DC to give reaading a shot. -- source link
