Double Blind (9/28)Instead, Eva parts a curtain of tall sunflowers and sees a girl standing by a bunch of high-growing purple flowers around a statue of a warrior. “Foxglove,” the girl says, turning, and Eva recognizes her as the one who’d interceded on her behalf earlier. She sizes Eva up with her eyes, not quite inviting but not unfriendly, and Eva takes another step forward. “Poisonous in large quantities, but if you–“ She twitches a long finger against a bell-shaped flower and there’s a high humming sound. Something tiny shoots from within, buzzing around the girl before it settles on her finger.“Oh,” Eva breathes, crossing the clearing to see the little creature. “Is that a faery?” Faeries can’t be photographed or videotaped, and so she’s only seen drawn pictures or cartoons featuring them. There had been an exhibit at one of the zoos she’d gone to as a child, and she remembers her nose pressed to the glass, squinting through the brightly colored flowers to try and catch a glimpse of one. This one isn’t timid like the ones in the zoo had been, though. It’s perched on the girl’s finger by the tips of its pointed toes, its olive skin sleek and marked with darker green patterns along its arms and legs. Its face is sharply defined, pointed ears framing a shock of hair, and it chitters another high-pitched hum when Eva reaches out to touch it. “They used to be all over these woods,” the girl says, nudging the faery so it crosses over to Eva’s finger. “When I was a kid, I’d lie down in the middle of a clearing and they’d come out and play with me. You can’t find many like that anymore.”Read more at Patreon here.Start from the beginning here. -- source link
