Bad Film Friday, July 12, 6 PM (161 min) A massive film nearly 20 years in the making, we are absolutely thrilled to finally have the opportunity to see (and screen for you, of course) Sion Sono’s legendary lost epic, Bad Film. Set in an alternate 1997 Tokyo, this chaotic sci-fi tale imagines the city as a gangland embroiled in a violent war between its Chinese and Japanese gangs. Against this anarchic background, however, a star-crossed love blossoms between a Japanese girl and a beautiful drug dealer from the rival gang. Will this union finally collapse the barriers between these fervent enemies, or will it just prove to be the first step towards their mutually assured destruction? Shot in 1995 with Tokyo activist performance collective Tokyo GAGAGA, Sono knew he would never get the permits and permission needed to shoot the immense set pieces he imagined. Instead he went straight guerilla, staging immense gang fights involving hundreds of extras in front of some of Tokyo’s most recognizable landmarks. The wonderfully twisted result reads somewhere between John Waters and race war. It simply has to be seen to be believed.
