dreambutch: Reclaimed Labrys Lesbian Flag ConceptsThe pink-red gradient lesbian flag originated as a tribe flag (like the Bear flag) for Lipstick Lesbians, and as such many other lesbians feel uneasy using it. This purple labyrs flag has been traced back to 1999, when a gay male graphic designer named Sean Campbell created it for a publication. It was based on then-common misconception that the black badge was used by Nazis to mark lesbians and the widespread use of the Labrys by lesbians. This flag, and the labrys symbol, have since come to be somewhat associated with Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminists. These transphobes have no right to sully the symbols of lesbian history.Presented here are alternative flag designs intended to preserve the use of the Labrys symbol for all lesbians - especially Lesbians of Color and Trans Lesbains. (Inclusive and generic versions have been created in full support of Lesbians of Color, Trans Lesbians, and Trans Lesbians of Color, but with the understanding that there are scenarios in which white and/or cis Lesbians should not be using the symbols of Black Lives Matter or Trans Women.)The Lavender Labrys (and variants)This design aims to hold true to the familiar Sean Campbell design. The lavender field represents the association of lavender with lesbians (see the Lavender Scare, the Lavender Menace). The Reclaimed Labrys refers to its rumored use among Minoan Crete Matriarchs as well as the later lesbian appropriation of the symbol. The central black field is a functional design holdover from the old flag, but I believe it should be interpreted to represent strength in association with the Labrys’ meaning of ‘independence and strength’Modern Brick Labrys (and variants)This flag is for use by any lesbian who prefers to use it.This flag features a brick orange field based on the Butch Lesbian orange gradient flag currently in circulation. The brick shade was utilized based on the following post by tumblr user sweaterfemme: U: sexuality is fluidme: actually my sexuality is very solid. its a brick that says ‘lesbian’ and i can hit people with it as well as this image:The Rainbow Labrys (and variants)Lesbians have long belonged under the rainbow banner alongside our gay brothers. This flag celebrates our unity as well as our unique Lesbian experience. I strongly encourage all lesbians who are not TERFs to use these flags. These flags exist to explicitly REJECT transphobic rhetoric in our spaces and to counter misinformation about the use of the black triangle badge during the Nazi Holocaust. -- source link
