mehreenkasana: Here’s your problem, Senator Sherry Rehman. The subtleties of language determine a lot. If you need to qualify your condemnation of the murder of an innocent woman by specifically and deliberately stating that she “was no role model” then don’t bother with the formality of issuing a hollow statement. Don’t bother because you are not concerned about the woman, her life or her death. You are not concerned about the cancerous, patriarchal ideology of ‘honor’ needled into the very skin of little girls who grow up to become women — humans much like yourself, you’ll be surprised to learn —to the degree where a word, a gesture, the up and down of her own breath can become an unsettling threat to the stunted reputations of the men in her family. Don’t bother because you are either oblivious to or purposefully shying away from calling a spade a spade; our sickening collective philosophy on words like ‘respectable’ and ‘decent’ is strictly limited to keeping women on their toes, preferably chained to a wall somewhere, more likely to be spat on, fucked, and thrown away. Don’t bother because you’re a prisoner to the same thought process that creates false and dangerous binaries of Good Women VS Bad Women. You still believe in a tailored, regulated and policed format of womanhood, adhering to calm the anxieties and insecurities of men who place the burden of ‘honor’ on women because they have nothing noble in themselves. You’re afraid of women and you’re afraid of yourself. -- source link
