flowerishness: Rubus spectabilis (Salmonberry)It is generally believed that people first arrived in North America about 14,000 years ago. As they spread down the west coast they encountered the Salmonberry and quickly made the berries a staple food. Not quite as sweet as it’s cousin the Raspberry it was eaten fresh and, more importantly, it was pounded into mush and dried as fruit bark for the long, cold winter months. Naturally high in Vitamin C it was an essential ‘survival food’ and no doubt, at the very least, kept scurvy at bayThis lovely specimen is growing in it’s home and native land (AKA my back garden). Salmonberry flowers have up to a hundred stamens and play ‘dinner table’ to all the local pollinating insects. It’s little pink face is always a welcome sight in April and, as per usual, it’s showed up right on time. Isn’t Springtime wonderful? -- source link
