flowerishness: Ribes sanguineum (Flowering red currant)Pokey’s PinkRed currant is a native plant in Coastal British Columbia and it’s red flowers are a common sight in local forests, but unusually, this single pink blossom occurred on a plant otherwise covered in the standard red version. In botany, this is called a ‘sport’ (a naturally occurring mutation) and in seventy percent of cases, the flower is so damaged that it can’t produce viable seed. If a sport does produce seed it usually won’t breed true but will revert to it’s original form. However in some cases the seeds will breed true and indeed there is a variety of red currant called Pokey’s Pink which looks just like this. Supposedly, Pokey’s Pink is derived from a single plant found growing years ago in the Columbia River gorge. -- source link
