The First Krag — The M1876 Krag Petersson,Created and introduced by O. J. H. Krag and Axel Petersson in 1876, the Krag Petersson was an oddly designed breech loading repeating rifle. Yes that is right, a breech loading repeating rifle. One of its most prominent features was a large oversized hammer. Cocking the hammer worked a falling block action. Underneath the barrel was a tubular magazine which held ten, 12mm blackpowder cartridges. When the hammer was cocked the falling block would lower and pick up a cartridge from the magazine while simultaneously ejecting an empty cartridge. However there was no mechanism to insert the cartridge into the breech, so the user had to then nudge the cartridge into the chamber. When ready, pulling the trigger would force the breech block forward, creating a seal, and fire the rifle. The Krag Petersson was tested by military’s all over the world, however only Norway would purchase the rifle, most being issued to the Norwegian Navy. About 1,000 were produced for Norway while hundreds more were made for testing by other countries. Today they are very rare firearms. -- source link
