It’s coming! The 108th Lerch Festival is this weekend, February 2 & 3. Major Lerch came from Australia Hungary to Joetsu to observe the military. At the request of Nagaoka Gaishi who was commander of the local regiment, Lerch began teaching soldiers how to ski using a one-pole method right here on Mt. Kanaya. This marked the very first skiing in Japan. During the two-day festival, there will be a fireworks, music and a floating lantern launch on Saturday, and snowmobile rides, food stalls and sake booths and a one-pole ski demonstration in traditional turn-of-the century clothes on Sunday. Photos here are of Mt. Kanaya and the museum commemorating the birthplace of skiing in Japan.
