Another “what are we gonna do today?” day at I CAN brought us to Arimagawa River to check the salmon returning home. The “bare-handed salmon grab” is held in #nadachi in November each year, but this year they had more signups than salmon, so we made a visit to the salmon breeding center instead. Our little group showed up unannounced, but we were treated to a great talk about how the salmon eggs are harvested and fertilized, and how the hatchlings are carefully raised up river until they can be released. These fish journey across the Pacific Ocean, up to the Aleutian Islands before returning here to our little country river to start the next generation. There were already tens of salmon at the mouth of the river, the “first wave” of what should be culminating this week. After getting some salmon jerky (beer snack AND dog treat!) we went 5 minutes up the road to Tanihama Park for a picnic. If you’re ever in town, stop by this under-used park for the views and the dog run. #joetsu #salmonrun #arimagawa #tanihamapark #freeschoolican https://www.instagram.com/p/BqUZsUejv5v/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=18zmpe5tce21z -- source link
