ccadrarebooks: It’s le 14 Juillet, or as we English-speakers call it, Bastille Day (just don’t say “Happy Bastille Day!” to a French person - ça ne se fait pas!). The patriotically-dressed lady above is taken from Fancy dresses described, or, what to wear at fancy balls, 1880, and our danseuse is dressed as an Incroyable (Unbelievable), a rebellious youth movement that arose during the 1790s, during the French Revolution (1789–99). Oddly enough, she isn’t called a Merveilleuse, which was the female equivalent of the Incroyable. Ask a librarian to see anything in our special collections! -- source link
