Meet Jill Molidor, otherwise known by her stage name, Statik (19) is a photographer, self portrait artist, and up-and-coming musician. With her new EP, The Headlights, Jill breaks into a new sector of the music industry, bringing all of her 17,000+ Instagram followers along for the ride. Although known for her electric sound and spirit, we talk to Jill about the quieter things in life, living in the mountains, the sounds that inspire her; of course, Shania Twain, and her muses. Art by Mya Heavener, Interview by Abby Phillips How did you discover your stage name? The definition of “static” is motionless and unchanging. I love the word, but I’m not the definition, so I changed the “c” to a “k”, and created my own definition, which is the antithesis of static. You treat your Instagram page as more of a diary with your followers, rather than a gallery. Do your followers inspire you any way in terms of your music? (If yes, how so) I’ve met a lot of amazing people through instagram, and I’ve discovered a lot of amazing stories. And yeah, I’ve totally said in the past that I like to use my Instagram as my “diary” of sorts. I just think it’s so cool, you know? It’s a place where you can keep track of how you feel one day, how your followers are doing another day, and you can meet new people and still appreciate beautiful photography. The people who take the time to follow me are my everything. I’ve written songs about individual followers and their stories, but the song I wrote for all of my followers as a whole is Much to Me. They’ve all gone through a lot, they all have someone who hurt them, and they all deserve a song for that. One day, I asked my followers to comment all of the shitty things people have ever said to them, and I took those comments and made them into a song. Much to Me is about totally letting go and not letting people get under your skin. And if I’m being honest it’s really just saying “screw you”, which everyone can relate to.Who are three musicians who’ve influenced your sound?Shania Twain, circa her Up! album. When I was in the 3rd grade I played it on repeat for like days at a time. It was one of the first albums I ever really listened to. Up! was really sassy. I listened to Sleigh Bells a lot when I was recording, and I love their sound. I think my music would have been different if I hadn’t been listening to them. I also listened to a lot of Lily Allen when I was writing my EP. She’s funky. She’s badass. I’ve also noticed that most of your photography takes place alongside nature. You also use a lot of flowers/vines as props as well. Do you use the inspiration you find in nature in your music as well? I have a passionate love affair with nature. The music I have on my EP was actually heavily inspired by the element of fire and warmth. “Playing with matches never felt so good…” “lover of the fire, daughter of the sun…” “hell is repetition”. Next up? Maybe water, maybe air. Maybe I’ll just write a bunch of songs about flowers. I live in the mountains, and I’m totally inspired by my surroundings.What/who inspires you to continue creating?I’m obsessed with the idea that there are people listening to what I have to say. I was ignored for a long time, by a variety of groups. It’s nice to know that there are people out there who can relate to me and the more I can help them, the better. I write for my followers, and solely for my followers. Like I said, they’re my everything.
