GRL Power in Photography: Interview with Louise Buckley For the second part of our series, Madi
GRL Power in Photography: Interview with Louise Buckley For the second part of our series, Madison interviews Louise Buckley (14); a young mind putting street photography and her observations into a new perspective. When did you start photography?I’ve been taking photos since I was young, but I developed an interest in 2013. First when I got an Instagram, and later that year when I did black and white film photography at summer camp and got to print my photos in a darkroom. What does photography mean to you?Photography is a creative way for me to document the world around me. Since I really started taking photos, I’ve appreciated so much more beauty and payed attention to details that might go unnoticed or unappreciated. Paying attention to color, composition, contrast and lighting in photos has me looking for those things even when I don’t have a camera around. Living in New York where everyone is always is in a hurry, I think it’s important to slow down and observe beauty, that’s been an important lesson for me. Is there an emotion you try to evoke through your images? My photos are all different and don’t all have a shared theme, so it really depends on the image. I’ve heard people talk about an “artistic eye” and I think that mine is shown through my images. When I’m taking a photo I want to capture the little things that I see, but that may not be noticed by everyone and my goal as the photographer is for people to appreciate the image and then to take notice of detail in their everyday life. Do you plan to continue photography?I definitely do. I am still unsure of what I want to study in school, if not photography something else creative like illustration or graphic design maybe, I’m interested in product styling/photographing too. I can’t imagine not taking photos. Less than 25% of “All Time Great Photographers” credited are female , how does this make you feel about being a female in this industry?Hearing that is really disappointing, whoever wrote that is biased. That’s a misrepresentation, female photographers deserve way more recognition. Female photographers will be given the credit we deserve and work together to get our work shown.Do you have any fellow female photographers that inspire you?Lee Miller, Minna Brackett, Cindy Sherman, Leah Strogatz, Annie Leibovitz. There’s a lot of women who inspire me and I’ve found a lot of them through Instagram, some of my favorites are Lauren Tepfer, Jungmi Kim, Miriam Marlene Waldner and Cecy Young. Do you have any advice for photographers who are just starting? My advice for photographers who are just starting is to have fun, experiment, find what you like aesthetically and don’t be afraid to show your work! Don’t be discouraged by hearing that people believe only 25% of “all time greatest photographers” are women and to work to change that perspective.
