57 years ago, The Pill caused major controversy as the political and religious Powers that Be at the time feared that a woman-controlled, highly-effective and non-disruptive birth control would undermine morality: It would increase pre-marital and casual sex, it would decouple sex, procreation, and marriage, making marriage less about “starting families” and more about mutual satisfaction, opening the door for egalitarian, companionship based marriages and (gasp), even same sex marriages! They feared it would enable people with uteruses to postpone getting married and having babies (OMG- some might NEVER have babies), giving them unencumbered time to pursue education, start businesses, advance in careers (or simply keep their career, at a time when it was still legal to fire someone for being pregnant), gaining economic independence, control of their futures, and fucking up gender roles and the family unit. I don’t know how progressives quelled conservatives’ fears at the time, but the truth is, their concerns were 100% spot on. Everything conservatives worried about happening, happened. The real controversy is that they considered those outcomes controversial to begin with (and that they still do in so many ways… looking at you #ahca…) #todayinhistory #thepill #birthcontrol #sexhistory -- source link
