there are quite a few stories behind the fashions that were worn at the #metgala. @saweetie’s reasoning is one of my favorites! #repost • @filipinaontherise - Ayy that’s my type!! ✨ Rapper #Saweetie paid homage to her #Filipino and #Black roots at the #2021MetGala where the dress code was “American Independence.” The rapper wore a custom red Christian Cowan gown, with a train in two panels: one in red, yellow, blue, and white to represent the #Filipinoflag, and the other in black and red for the #BlackAmericanheritageflag. the gown was hand-embellished with 10 MILLION crystals. Saweetie has a #FilipinoChinese mother and an #AfricanAmerican father. She’s been nominated several times at the #MTV #VMAs and #BillboardMusic Awards. During any opportunity she can, the “My Type” and “Best Friend” artist proudly shares that she’s part #Filipina and stories of her upbringing with that side of the family from the home-cooked meals to karaoke sessions. On her upcoming album, expect some colorful #Tagalog words on one of the tracks. “I do talk some [sht] in Tagalog,” Saweetie said in a recent interview with Billboard. “My mom was really against it. My Asian side, they’re very traditional — they were immigrants. So it’s like, their culture’s a little bit more reserved. So, she was just like, ‘Girl, I can’t believe you just said that!’” Saweetie also declared that Filipino food is the best food! “I could eat that for the rest of my life.
