mimic-of-modes: “Woman in a Polonaise Gown of striped taffeta, trimmed with gauze, retying her garter and allowing the sight of her lovely leg.” (Galerie des Modes, 1778) The original conception of the polonaise gown (robe à la polonaise) was cut unlike an ordinary gown in that it had no waist seam. It hung loosely from the body, and was considered a very flattering, informal type of dress - but a dangerously sensual one to the more conservative. Not only was the fit a radical change, but because it was highly fashionable it was thought to be only suitable for the wealthy to wear: for anyone else, it was a pretension and an extravagance. -- source link
