The Merwin Hulbert Revolver,During the later half of the 1800’s there were four big names in revolvers; Colt, Smith and Wesson, Remington, and Merwin Hulbert. Unfortunately the Merwin Hulbert revolver has been overshadowed by all the others, despite being a fine quality revolver.Invented in the 1870’s by Joseph Hulbert, the Merwin and Hulbert revolver featured a unique mechanism in which the barrel and cylinder was pulled forward and rotated 90 degrees to expel spent cartridge casings. Subsequent models simply pulled straight out, as pictured above.Joseph Hulbert and his business partner Milan Merwin. The company produced four models, both in single action and double action, and also including pocket models. After Merwin’s death in 1888 the business passed down in entirety to the ownership of Joseph Hulbert and his brother, under the name “Hulbert Brothers & Co.”. Due to mismanagement and bad business decisions, Hulbert Brother & Co. was forced into bankruptcy in 1894. It was bought out by Hopkins and Allen who continued to produced the revolvers in the Merwin and Hulbert name unitl 1916, when it too went out of business and was sold to Marlin. -- source link
