Congolese currency from the early 1960s, during the period immediately after the country’s independence on June 30, 1960. Unfortunately the brutal civil war that followed independence, the corrupt dictatorship of Joseph Mobutu between 1965-1997, and the civil war from 1997-2003 robbed the Congo of much of its economic promise.
