Gaba Kawa: Vol 1 The Plot: Cute demoness Rara has come to the human world to cause mischief amongst the plebs, despite being a bit deficient in the evilness department. At school, she meets a hot guy who she thinks is her demon crush in disguise, only to find out he’s just an ordinary muggle. Star-crossed romance and supernatural goofiness ensue. Is This A Magical Girl Series?: Yes. It’s a mild sexing-up of the classic Cute Witch formula, where a Magical Girl travels to Earth to a) complete a mission and b) make friends with muggles. The twist is that Rara is an evil Magical Girl, and rather than being tasked with helping muggles, Rara is forbidden from doing so on pain of losing her powers one by one. Rara also has an arrogant blonde OHOHO rival in fellow demoness Bibi, who does the typical “I’m helping you out, but not because I like you!1! tsun tsun” thing. Is It Any Good?: Gaba Kawa is an enjoyable little hit of bog-standard shojo. You could make a decent drinking game out of playing “spot the cliché,” but it picks its clichés well, and adds pretty art, likeable characters, and decent comedy bits into the bargain. It’s also a bit on the steamy side — there’s a sub plot where a ghost boy wants Rara to shag him so he can go to the afterlife, though disappointingly they don’t go through with it. But for me, the strongest point of the manga is the love interest, Retsu, because he’s an excellent example of how to write a bad-boy without making him a horrible douchenozzle. Retsu is a tall, dark, handsome, mysterious, brooding loner who rides a motorcycle and has secret angst, but despite his anti-social demeanor, he’s a perfectly nice dude and a fairly interesting character whose mystique and alienation come from his ability to see spirits. Unfortunately, the ending of this manga is such a hot mess of WTF that it might ruin the experience for you. I reread it several times and still have no idea what the hell happened. -- source link
