mushroomgay:Barnet, London, UK, October 2019Collared earthstar fungus (Geastrum triplex)These beautiful old specimens are puffballs, which release their spores from that black sack-like structure (which you can see a video of here). There are several other puffballs that are similar - I think this is most likely Geastrum triplex simply because of the impressive size, with several of them being as wide as my palm, whereas other, similar puffballs are typically smaller. Especially with these old, desiccated specimens it is difficult to tell for certain, however.They’re a lovely, alien sight scattered across the forest floor like this, and I can’t imagine what it’s like to come across them not knowing what they are. -- source link
