Whether it is fear of violence or social conditioning or cowardice, they have the most repressed fight or flight mechanism. She is horrified by this. Terrified. But what she clings to is not her rights or her dignity or even her safety. She clings to her composure. That feeling that if you do not over-react it will all end soon. That when everything else is taken from you you can cling to some tiny slice of dignity by not freaking out. God bless the little darlings.
