brooklynmuseum: After arriving in New York City on the Queen Elizabeth, August 1947, Christian Dior was quickly enamored by the styles of American women and decided to expand his eponymous Parisian label here and then worldwide. In 1948, he opened Christian Dior–New York in the Heckscher Building at 730 Fifth Avenue at 57th Street (now known as the Crown Building) to sell luxury ready-to-wear to specialty shops and exclusive department stores across America. And on November 8, 1948, @dior unveiled his First American Collection of about eighty designs to a select group of buyers at his New York salon, which featured his newest colors: Dior Midnight Blue, Dior Rust and Champagne Rose. Journalists remarked upon Dior’s designs and the decor in the salon, both faithful to the spirit of the haute couture created by the House of Dior in Paris.Head to bit.ly/diorbkm to visit Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams, on view through February 20, 2022.Fitting in a Christian Dior–New York salon with (left to right) Christian Dior, Raymonde Zehnacker, Marguerite Carré, Mrs. Knoll, and Mizza Bricard, 1948.
