A strange, beautiful woman Self perception and image are two concepts that remain intriguing and immensely prevalent throughout my life. Bewildering is the fact that the majority of people I know have a negative self image. Comparing ourselves to others while simultaneously putting ourselves and others down creates a distorted breeding ground of competition. Recently, I was taking the train home. It was a late and humid Thursday night. A poem printed on a subway billboard, common in New York, caught my eye. It read:“A strange beautiful womanmet me in the mirrorthe other night.Hey,I said,What you doing here? She asked methe same thing.” On my way home, I could not draw my mind from an image of this “strange beautiful woman”. She became a comforting figure in my mind; someone who was me, Jane, but through the eyes of a different mind. Even though we live within ourselves, we are capable of expanding our self-perception, ways of thinking, and growing from our conscious mind. A couple of months ago, I was talking with some of my closest friends about what beauty really means to them. We came to the agreement that beauty is subjective and constantly evolving. To me, beauty can’t always be captured in a photograph or even a memory, rather through moments. When there is stillness or chaos, when things fall into place, and even when things fall apart. A friend of mine came into school one morning with puffy eyes and a sad smile. She had been up all night crying, and she kept saying how shitty she must’ve looked. However, to me, she was radiating beauty. The power of vulnerability is beautiful. Seeing somebody filled with emotion is beautiful. Growth and overcoming pain is beautiful. Little moments of being with loved ones and visions painted in our minds become memories. We have thousands and thousands of these little moments tucked away, sometimes coming to surface to fill us with nostalgia and angst. Beauty is surrounding our world, the core revolving around love. Connecting love and beauty is something that has opened my eyes up to a whole new world of warmth. Instead of constantly comparing myself, my body, and my character to people who I don’t even know, I’m able to see myself as an individual; as a strange and beautiful woman. By: Jane -- source link
