Let’s Get WeirdI’ll keep this one short (because for me that’s really strange), but you want to know what I love about Doctor Strange? It’s weird, and it embraces it.Oh and get ready to hear the word weird about twenty times because Thesaurus.com is for suckers I’m exhausted I’m making a point. Yeah, that’ll do.So, this movie. The visuals could take up an entire post of their own, but sufficed to say: yes, the trailer looks like Inception, and yes, it takes it to the next level and there’s more to it than you’ve seen. Get that out of the way right off the bat, because that’s a huge plus this movie has going for it. It’s absolutely awesome to watch (especially in 3D, actually). But that’s not my favourite thing about it. Nor are the characters, who are as enjoyably Marvel as they come– with some relatable heart, on point humour, and overall awesomeness pretty much guaranteed when your ticket stub’s for an MCU movie. It’s not a perfect movie or anything, but definitely a fun ride– and what really makes it special? It’s half of the title!Fuck Yeah, That’s So WeirdFuck yeah! That’s so weird! It should come to no one’s surprise that I’m a purveyor of the unusual. And I mean, everybody’s weird, and relatively speaking this is tame compared to the kinds of out-there it could’ve been (with mystical arts, ancient eastern philosophies– I’m not saying it doesn’t go for it, but it still fits in the Marvel universe, if you know what I mean). But still. It’s so great. The mind-blowing, psychedelic visual effects aren’t the end of it– it’s the magic and sci-fi concepts and scenarios that really get me excited. From Strange’s bargain (favourite scene, by the way), to watching the snow fall, to, well, just about anything I can phrase vaguely enough to only count as light spoilers – it really connected with me.Which is why I surprised when it didn’t connect with my mum. For a little background, we’ve watched all the Marvel movies together, and she’s really enjoyed them all along with me. But, when asked about Doctor Strange, she told my brother and I she just couldn’t relate to it.Which is understandable, but when you think about it, is actually pretty wild. The superhero genre (or, rather, movies with superheroes in them) has become so commonplace, so regularly well-executed, that stories about a god among men or a super soldier or a literal hulk are just normal. But the magic man with the drug-trips and the exposition monks? That’s too far, man.In actuality, I understand her complaints, but personally, I love when this universe is allowed to get weird. The Future of Marvel MoviesSo, with this and Civil War, we’re officially into phase 3– successfully. Meaning in two years time in 2018 the MCU will have managed to last a decade. Not just the first interconnected universe/movie franchise of its kind, but the first to do it so long and with so many entries. And with the rise of DC and Sony, with 30th Century Fox somewhere in there, some people are understandably getting a little tired of it all. Or, at least, Marvel fatigue specifically, because even as good or even great as the movies tend to be, there’s a lot of them. A LOT. As you can guess, I’m not really in that boat yet since I love supers and the kinds of stories you can tell with them, but now more than ever 8 years in, I appreciate variety in between the big events.Throw me a Guardians of the Galaxy. Toss me some Ant-Man while you’re at it. And for the love of God, if you want this universe to last, give me something Strange. -- source link
