The First True Semi-Automatic Pistol — The Schonberger - Laumann 1892.Invented by the Austrian inventor Joseph Lauman in 1892, the Schonberger - Lauman was the first truly semi-automatic pistol ever created. A blowback design, the pistol used the force of expanding gases when fired to “blow back” the breech or action of the pistol. This would cock the pistol as well as eject the spent casing and load a new cartridge into the chamber. The Schonberger - Lauman was fed from a five round internal magazine which was loaded from the top through the open action. The pistol fired a now defunct rimmed cartridge called the 7.8x19R.While the design was certainly revolutionary in an age when revolvers were the norm, it would take designs like the Borchardt, Mauser Broomhandle, Luger, and the later Browning designs to make semi automatic pistols popular. -- source link
