Scarlett Johansson —a white American actress—has just been slated for the role of Major Motoko Kusanagi—a Japanese task force leader— for the American live-action adaption of Ghost in the Shell. Ghost in the Shell is originally set in Japan with an all Japanese crew, so why is the re-make being made with a white American taking the lead role? Additionally, if the lead role is going to a white American, does this mean that the setting will be changed to a futuristic America with an all white cast? This re-make is a huge opportunity for Asian actresses and actors to come into the spot light, we can not continue the long Hollywood tradition of whitewashing asian characters to allow a white actor take the lead (Ex. Edge of Tomorrow, Speed Racer, Dragonball Evolution, Fist of the North Star…)You can help by signing a petition to ask Dreamworks to reconsider giving the role to Johansson and by spreading awareness of whitewashed asian characters. -- source link
