teresavampa: queermediarepresentation: Asexuality Awareness Week is upon us! So here is a rec list of some of the Ace media we know of, feel free to add your own in reblogs! This list is a little shorter than it could have been, mostly because I’m wrapped up in university work, so to make up for that there will be several other mini rec posts throughout the week If I can rustle up some more recs. Books: Wings of Destruction by Victoria Zagar (x) ”Society has collapsed, driven to madness after a great economic crash. Gangs roam the streets, taking any man, woman or child without a Mate for their own. Martin is on the brink of despair, an asexual man who cannot keep a Mate. Facing a life he cannot bear, he heads to Spire Rock to end it. But when he reaches it, he encounters Anael, an angel sent to assess the world for destruction—and the first to accept Martin exactly as he is.” The Bone People by Keri Hulme (x) The main character is asexual. Trigger warnings for child abuse. The Secret Six/The Movement Roshanna Chatterji is an asexual character from DC who actually refers to herself as asexual, you can learn more about her here. The Posterchildren Has an asexual character and it’s about queer superheroes, TV/Films/Webseries Sirens US is a show about paramedics and it has an asexual character, though we’ve been warned that she isn’t taken as seriously as she should be by the other characters but this post does a better job of explaining it than I can. Her name is Valentina and according to the wiki she’s a recurring character. Varys in Game of Thrones is asexual too though he isn’t a main character really, more of a side character, (GOT tw for rape, homophobia and intense misogyny among other issues just so you know what you’re getting yourself into) Here is a clip to confirm it. All or Nothing (x) is a webseries sitcom about two room mates, one is pansexual (all) and one is asexual (nothing). It reached it’s funding goal and more in August so be on the look out for that. When it’s released we’ll mention it on the blog definetly but in case we miss it keep your eyes open. The Olivia Experiment is a film, it has a few stereotypes in it so watch out for that but the asexual characters are treated better in the second half of the film according to this article. Watch a trailer (x) and read more about it here. -Lauren Actually, Sirens is pretty good about its portrayal of asexuality! Some of the other characters think it sounds “boring”, but it’s still very firmly treated as a legitimate sexual orientation. There’s even a couple of scenes where a character who’s romantically interested in Voodoo (the asexual woman) brings up the “have you actually tried?”/”maybe you just haven’t met the right person”/”it’s just like celibacy, right?” crap and she completely shuts it down. He ends up educating himself on the movement and accepts her asexuality, telling her that he doesn’t care if they never have sex or even date, he just likes spending time with her. Fair warning, though: most of the characters on the show are allosexual, and there is a lot of discussion of sex in most episodes, so if you’re fairly sex-averse or sex-repulsed, you may want to just watch the episode about Voodoo’s asexuality (s1e6, “The Finger”). Hey, everyone! We know our followers are always looking for more asexual characters in media and fanfic, so here are some recommendations. I know I’d only heard of a handful of these. I’m also fairly sure the book Chameleon Moon by thesylverlining contains asexual characters, but I haven’t read the whole thing yet so I can’t be sure. -- source link
