So last week while I was hiding from the internet and panicking about deadlines, I built a rock garden. It’s ugly, innit? I admit it, it’s ugly. But I scrounged up the miscellaneous cinder blocks and paving stones and bits of slate from weird corners of the yard All By My Very Own Self so I’m proud. Why were there so many weird chunks of unattractive rock and cinder block in this yard? I will never know. More importantly, it holds four or five different kinds of Sempervivum, some Delosperma, and miscellaneous sedums both local and from Texas. Also some dwarf delphiniums in the back as a nod to the whole “pretty flowers” concept. One of the sempervivums is a CVS $2-bin plant. I guess these guys live for several years, flower once, and die–hopefully having spread many little baby offsets out to the sides. This one spent nearly all its life in a weird tiny peat-plug 2" pot getting shipped around the country. I mean, it’s a plant, it wasn’t thinking sad thoughts about its strange life, so whatever. But it’s opening its flowers out in real live sunlight where there are bugs and stuff. So. I can’t wait to see how they all overwinter. Give this a couple of years and it’ll look a lot more mellow. -- source link
