shredsandpatches:wifeofbath:shredsandpatches:notkingyet:professorfangirl:professorfangirl:NB: Richard’s interest in that boy is purely artistic.Something in his expression, there in that last gif, the way he drops his eyes and turns away…is that embarrassment? regret? a bit of guilty self-reflection? It emphasizes the touch of longing previous, and makes the homoerotic subtext so much more complicated.Damn, that man can act.#I should NOT be looking at this boy this way. #for I’m a Christian king. #and sodomy’s a crime. #but DAYUM.My (totally historical-background-influenced) headcanon about Richard and sexuality is that despite his time period and the fact that he actually is quite devout, he’s surprisingly guilt-free about the whole sodomy thing. His rationale is that since God let him put down the Peasants’ Revolt despite his being madly in love with Robert de Vere, it is clearly okay.In addition to the subtext, there is another aspect of this scene that adds more layers to Richard’s interaction with the Saint Sebastian model. During the Black Death, Sebastian’s role as patron saint of plague victims became especially important. Many drew connections between the arrows that had pierced him and the random way the Plague would strike people down. We have records of prayers to him asking for his protection and intercession, such as this one which goes, “O martyr Sebastian! Be with us always, and by your merits keep us safe and sound and protected from plague. Commend us to the Trinity and to the Virgin Mary, so that when we die we may have our reward: to behold God in the company of martyrs.” One of the victims of the Plague was Richard’s beloved first wife, Anne, whose death is often said to be the leading thing that drove Richard to make so many bad decisions near the end of his reign. So Richard is watching the creation of a piece of art honoring the saint that should have protected his precious wife and didn’t. -- source link
