art-of-swords: Rapier Dated: 17th century Culture: German Measurements: overall length 97 cm Provenance: a castle in Denmark The sword has a straigh, double-edged blade of hexagonal section, the first part having a groove at the centre and the signature “FRANCISCO RUIZ” among trophies and partially gilt, floral motifs. The blackened, solid iron hilt is richly chiseled, while the quillon and loop-guards are decorated with roses coming out from a fish mouth. The back features a small, pierced valve and a thumb-ring. The grip and pommel are decorated with buds and small flowers featuring pierced stalks, while the button of the pommel is made in the shape of a rose.
