condemnedtorocknroll: maybeawerewolf: Derek never forgot what Erica wanted. He traded out his camaro for a safer, bigger toyota. He knew they could survive a crash but he’d read that it was much easier for someone to learn to drive in an SUV. The night he found her body and carried it out of the bank, he sat in the car. He rested his hands on the steering wheel. He imagined her road rage, yelling at the people in front of the car for not going the speed limit or not using a blinker. Derek imagined her singing along with the radio and hanging her necklaces over the rear view mirror like Laura used to. It was a few hours before he could make himself get out of the car. thing is. thing is, when he bit erica, he gave her everything she wanted. big, greasy meal for the first time in years? drove her across town to get the best hamburger he knew. high heels? take three pairs, don’t look at the price tag. mini skirts? sure. pricey underwear? dude, he lived with his sister, he’s cool about it. leather jacket? of course. make an unforgettable entrance and drop jaws at school? derek drives her and picks her up in front of everyone. he can hear laura in the back of his head, how she’d fuss over erica and how well she would have fit with them even back in new york. erica and boyd leave, and derek gets the new car. thinks that maybe when things settle down, they’ll come back. he can teach her how to drive, maybe. he lifts her into the car, absolutely refuses to put her in the trunk even if it might be smarter, but if he keeps her in the back seat he can pretend, at least for a little while, that she’s only asleep. roll the windows down and pretend. a year later they’re driving to the beach, scott in one car with lydia and jordan, stiles and liam in the jeep right behind them. he’s in the passenger side of the toyota, kira singing along to the radio and her brand new license in the cup holder between them. he knows erica and laura won’t be there if he looks in the rearview mirror, but if he closes his eyes he can imagine it, and that’s good enough. -- source link
