What’s so sad about all this is that everything Pruitt did was so he could have a second chance at something he deprived himself of - love and family life - if only priests didn’t have to be celibate. He could have changed denominations, perhaps, but he’d have to leave the community since it seems Crockett was almost all Catholic. Mildred was “never going to do that” because of how much his community and calling meant to him. If you think of how much pain and horror the forced celibacy of the priesthood has caused - how much it has cut people off from forming normal adult relationships and what a smokescreen it has created for extreme abuses to occur (not that many of those abuses would have occurred whether or not priests were expected to be celibate), I’d say that’s a perfect example of Midnight Mass’ overall statement. That religious orthodoxy and fervor can cut us off from the very things that bring us closest to the transcendently joyous things that make life worth living. -- source link
