awed-frog:blacktigersprings: animalsandtrees: “Non-vegans like to point out how a plant-based (vegan) diet isn’t complete because of the B12 vitamin that we should supplement in order to avoid a deficiency. Guess who also needs to supplement B12? Livestock. Guess where non-vegans get their B12 from? Supplements via livestock.” I wanted to know how true this is so I just googled “vitamin b12 dosage for cows/sheep” and found that the internet is FULL of resources for farmers on exactly how much b12 to inject into their livestock for optimal health. O.o meanwhile someone somewhere is screaming about how plant foods are deficient in b12 and how that’s a good reason for dismissimg veganism altogether, my dude, meat would be deficient in b12 too if farmers didn’t intentionally inject it into the animals. So how about we just eat the vegetables, take our b12 supplement and leave the cow out of it? The thing is, B12 is only produced by some bacteria - herbivores get it from the plants they’re eating, and carnivores get it from the meat of herbivore animals. The reason farm animals now need B12 supplements is because they’re fed industrially produced feed or fucking candy instead of grass. Plus, idk. ‘Normal’ people are out there developing fucking scurvy, gobbling 19 teaspoons of sugar a day, having junk and take-out for every meal - children’s teeth are rotting in their mouths and the government has to keep reminding everyone to ‘Eat their 5 A Day!’ (which is literally one apple and one big tomato) and ‘here is a way to trick your children into consuming 1 (one) carrot this week!’ but somehow vegans have to take one vitamin a day and they’re the ones with the problem. Okay. -- source link
