apuleiaprimilla:Distance slab of the Twentieth Legion, recording the completion of 4411 feet of the Antonine Wall.It reads: Imp(eratori) C(aesari) / T(ito) Ae(lio) Hadria/no Antonino Aug(usto) Pio p(atri) p(atriae) / vex(illatio) / leg(ionis) XX / V(aleriae) V(ictricis) fec(it) / p(er) p(edum) IIII(milia)CDXI, meaning “For the Emperor Caesar Titus Aelius Hadrianus Antoninus Augustus Pius, Father of his Country, a detachment of the Twentieth Valiant and Victorious Legion completed [this work] over a distance of 4411 feet".Construction began in 142 AD at the order of Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius, and took about 12 years to complete. The wall was protected by 16 forts with a number of small fortlets between them. The soldiers who built the wall commemorated the construction and their struggles with the Caledonians in a number of decorative slabs, twenty of which still survive. Despite this auspicious start the wall was abandoned after only 20 years, and the garrisons relocated back to Hadrian’s Wall.142-143 A.D., found in Old Kilpatrick, Scotland© The Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow -- source link
