spaffy-jimble:transgirlnausicaa:songsofwar:soulsoaker:druganaut:effnchilly:blackmattersus:Geofeedia used the company’s APIs to create real-time maps of social media activity in protest areas, maps which were subsequently used to identify, and in some cases arrest, protestors shortly after their posts became public. This shit is important and dangerous afPeople thought protestors from Ferguson and B'more were crazy, were paranoid. Nah. As usual, the police teamed up with corporate tech to find ways to lock our community up. And that’s why you don’t hear about either city like that. They were ground zero for the police state. This is why you mask up and don’t take pictures of anyoneBut… Warrants… So… Police doing job… bad?Yes. police officers doing their job is bad, because their job is to maintain the police state, to protect the material interests of the wealthy class, to provide bodies for the prison-industrial complex to exploit for profit. their behavior in this instance needs to be understood as targeting protesters because even though they are legally permitted to apprehend persons with an outstanding warrant, their specific choice to use what is essentially electronic espionage on protestors is a material suppression of their ability to organize and protest. it’s a similar phenomenon to how police use racial and economic profiling to decide who to pull over, who to stop and frisk, who to let off with a warning, who to exercise violence against, who to shoot to death. whose neighborhoods get patrolled. whose 911 calls get answered. whose murders get investigated. Holy shit, when you think they couldn’t be willfully ignorant enough, they fucking drop in the racism. -- source link
