The French Nagant, The Mosin Nagant ChâtelleraultWhen the Russian Army adopted the Mosin Nagant in 1891, production at first was very slow. The industrial revolution had not affected Russia as profoundly as it did in the west, and as a result Russian industry lagged behind Europe and the United States. As a result, Russia purchased an order of 500,000 Nagant Rifles to be manufactured by France from a factory called Manufacture Nationale d'Armes de Châtellerault. The Châtellerault Nagant was an exact copy of the Russian Mosin Nagant produced at the time. There were many differences with Pre WWI models than the average 91/30 that you can buy today for $100. The first was that it was longer. The rear inclination sight was different, and would have been marked in arshini (1 arshin = 2 1/3 ft). The front wasn’t hooded like on the 91/30, and the stock sometimes lacked shoulder strap attachments. The Châtellerault Nagant was factory stamped in Russian with the Russian Imperial Crest, but was stamped identifying as being built at the Châtellerault arsenal. 503, 750 Châtellerault Nagant rifles were produced from 1891 - 1895. -- source link
