“Think of it! We could have gone on longing for one another and pretending not to notice forever. This obsession with dignity can ruin your life if you let it.” Comfort food with a binding. For the longest time one of my favourite people recommended this to me but I kept putting it off. I didn’t think I would like the format, a series of letters between the characters - but I couldn’t have been more wrong. When I was ill my friend brought me supplies and this book and I adored it so much I bought my own copy. A lovely, warm and sweet read; it’s a story of the island of Guernsey during the German occupation and the society of the title. Borne of necessity but banded together by their love of literature. Juliet Ashton, looking for her next book subject, joins the society and falls in love with the people and the island. I really don’t think anybody could resist. “That’s what I love about reading: one tiny thing will interest you in a book, and that tiny thing will lead you onto another book, and another bit there will lead you onto a third book. It’s geometrically progressive—all with no end in sight, and for no other reason than sheer enjoyment.” (at Weltevredenpark, Gauteng, South Africa) https://www.instagram.com/p/CU5JzZBIzWa/?utm_medium=tumblr -- source link
