What I read in November:The Days of Abandonment by Elena Ferrante: Whew, this was an intense read. Olga’s husband leaves her for a much younger woman and this book goes deep on the psychological aftermath. Not sure I would recommend it to a non-Ferrante obsessive because it is cuttingly dark, but her devoted readers should suck it up and go there.Modern Romance by Aziz Ansari: I downloaded this immediately after mainlining season 1 of Master of None on Netflix. Disappointment ensued. Did it have his signature buzzy, witty sense of humor? Yes. Was I interested in reading a sociological study? Eh, not so much. I thought it would be heavier on commentary/anecdotes and less of a chore. I think I expected essays rather than the history of dating and a how-to for modern dating.I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith: This was added to my to-read list after noting that several different people had it as one of their all-time favorites. HOW HAD I NEVER READ THIS BEFORE? It was so, so so, SO good. It felt like a more fun Pride and Prejudice. This will be a book I will feel the need to re-read for the rest of my life.Bone Gap by Laura Ruby: What an interesting, inventive read. Two brothers living in the tiny town of Bone Gap have their lives upended when a beautiful young woman appears on their doorstep. Gorgeous writing, lots of dreamlike surrealism – definitely recommend. -- source link
