What I read in September:The Story of the Lost Child by Elena Ferrante: The fourth and final Neapolitan Girls novel did not disappoint. While I’m sad this is the last of Elena Greco and Lina Cerullo, it’s kind of an embarrassment of riches that we had four volumes of Ferrante’s gorgeous, immersive storytelling. If you haven’t started this series for whatever reason, what are you waiting for? This is some of the finest contemporary fiction you will find.The Makioka Sisters by Junichiro Tanizaki: I read this on @thebronzemedal‘s recommendation. It took me a while to work through it but I enjoyed the family dynamics and politics of marrying off the two daughters of a notable Japanese family at the onset of WWII. The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen: Another long read. The narrator is living a double life – serving as a key adviser/assistant to a general while serving the communists as a spy into the general’s plans. Liked it but thought it could have used some editing down. -- source link
