The works in Disguise: Masks and Global African Art are organized around the idea that masquerade is always an art of becoming.Through disguise, people can become controlled, revealing and often reinforcing society’s structures. This Loma mask, Okobuzogui, is used by the Poro society to instruct and initiate boys into adulthood. Poro mythology holds that Okobuzogui “swallows” the boys in his menacing jaws as they leave the village for the initiation camp; he also accompanies them upon their return as young men.Posted by Kevin D.
