Review: Pop Kids by Davey Havok For those of you who have known me since I was at least 13 know that I once had quite an infatuation with the band AFI, particularly their lead vocalist, Davey Havok. When Davey Havok and AFI bassist Jade Pudget produced an album for their side project Blaqk Audio my heart was broken and I moved on and discovered new (to me) musical heart throbs. Still, when I heard that Davey was about to release his debut novel, my 14 year-old heart skipped a beat. I ordered the novel at the first chance I got. Knowing that Davey is no longer the muscled punk I had fallen in love with as a young teen, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. The title itself immediately disgusted me, but I flipped open that Pepto-Bismol pink door anyway and was introduced to a very conceited vegetarian 17-year old who answers to the name of “Score” (though his real name is Mike, but that’s SO drab). He and his friends live in a small Northern California town but sport the attitudes of big city kids who dream of red carpets, celebrities and Alexander McQueen. First off: DAVEY, IT DOES NOT MATTER WHO YOU ARE - IT IS NEVER OKAY FOR A 37 YEAR-OLD TO WRITE A PORNO FOR UNDERAGE TEENS! It’s creepy. Read: FUCKING CREEPY. It was really, really hard for me to get passed Score’s arrogant (awful!) personality. It felt like Davey was making sure everyone knew that the he himself is vegan and straightedge - and don’t you forget it!!! The characters are very unlikeable and two-dimensional, but perhaps that was the author’s goal? Maybe if I was a 14 year-old horny teenager this would probably be my favorite book ever. Alas, I am not. Before you read this book, be aware that it was poorly edited; you grammar-Nazis are going to have a heart attack every other page. Despite the novel grossing me out (each page is crusty with “joy”) and the chance of me every reading it again is slim, I’m still kicking myself in the butt for not knowing about preorders being signed. Sigh. -- source link
