Played with baby octopuses a few weeks ago for a piece displayed for a Halloween-themed art show! Here’s a photo I took of the imprints before I made the honeycomb-pentagon-like installation frame for the gallery. The piece is titled “Polpi Nero,” which is black octopuses in Italian. Octopuses are really fascinating creatures. Here’s a few facts that I find particularly cool:1. Mating rituals are pretty casual. Think of it as the moment you get your fast food through your car window and drive away. To put it lightly, males have a modified arm called the hectocotylus. Depending on the species, he will either approach a receptive female and insert the arm (receptive???? his arm!!?!?!!) into her oviduct or take off the arm (penis) and give it to her to store in her mantle for later. Merry Christmas.2. Octopuses die young. The 8-legged aliens only live to be 3-5 years old on average. 3. Octopuses can camouflage with both colors and textures.4. For food, they inject their paralyzing saliva into their prey before dismembering their bodies.5. They pretty much shit their pants as a defense mechanism (“inking”). 6. Octopuses don’t have internal skeletons, but they have beaks. -- source link
