thetwelvecaesars:owlask:thetwelvecaesars:owlask:I just spend 6 hours on this mess Family tree and it’s still not done !! ;A;Why !??!Edit: Fudge I forgot to mark Drusus Minor as Tiberius’s son ;A; I am the worst classical archaeologist the world has seen !!!This looks great. It was 6 hours well-spent and I have never seen anyone list Germanicus’ kids on a vertical list. It’s awesome and inventive! And I can see that Nero has SO many wives and it’s so funny, but true. And as for Sprous, I think he deserves to be in that list. (I personally think Sporus would identify as a man, but who knows.) Ah thank you ! Yeah I thought to do it vertically to save some space. Hehe but Claudius had the most with 4 wives. Nero definitely had 3. It kinda depends on if you count Sporus in or not (most books don’t but eh). Well I guess we’ll never really know how Sporus would identify himself, but he definitely had to be a Poppaea 2.0 for Nero. So not much of a choice. Kinda sad for both: Sporus becoming an embodiment of a dead person and has to give up his identity; and Nero not getting over the death of his wife. It’s really creative and I love it. Oh, he did? I mean, I know he had 4, but when I count wives, I also count husbands, so Nero wins, if I am right. Because he married Pythagoras (not the math-wizard) and/or some other freedman and some say Tengillius. (Or however you spell his name.)Sadly, we won’t know that info and yeah. Poppaea 2.0 is a good name for him. All of it’s sad, but I feel like Nero could have found a better look alike person, or at least I think. Because I just… I feel so BAD for Sporus.@owlask Awesome! It’s so brilliant, because I can never fit all the kids on one line. XDYES! I knew I was counting right and oddly enough, Claudius didn’t like men. It says so and I find it so awesome that fact is mentioned. (Suetonius, Clau. 33) That could mean that it was more normal to be bisexual in Rome. (Adds a lot of stupid Ancient Roman rules about gender roles I’ve discovered here, but whatever!)Sadly Suetonius and Tacitus are my own two I have a the moment. Cassius Dio is so hard to get a hold of for some reason. (I think modern books don’t mention Nero’s husbands because they are against same-sex relations and you can’t just erase things like that, stupid historians! And that’s why I don’t read many modern sources as they erase things like that!) The Below is REALLY for 18+ and TW: mutilation and the various abuse of a historical person is discussed.Really? BDSM? I will have to take a look at that. Because if I remember right, Nero just played the woman’s part and yeah… I am sure that was a strange wedding night. Suetonius gives a few details about it and it’s kinda cringe worthy, but in a laughable way. In Tacticus. the same place you referenced, it was just a very public wedding. I don’t see anything about BDSM, to be honest. I saw something on Nero’s Wiki page when I was trying to count Nero’s relationships and someone wrote about the mix up as well. That might be case. Tacitus as a writer seems a lot more concerned about the history of the state rather than the people. But Pythagoras is there in Tacitus and maybe the names get mixed up because there are some details that wouldn’t usually be public knowledge. XDUm… that’s where I disagree a bit. I am wondering why Nero didn’t just find a woman who looked like Poppaea. There are also a few more horrible details and such that I won’t mention, but I feel like people tend to forget that Sporus was a person who was horribly mutilated and forced to wed. I am personally on Sporus’ ‘side’ on this one as yes, Nero lost his wife, but…he went about finding a replacement the wrong way. I can sympathize with the loss of his wife- only slightly as he kicked her to death… but I feel SO bad for Sporus.Sporus is a very interesting character and he needs way more attention. Or at least that’s what I think. I don’t think that Sporus put up an identity act, it was more of a role forced on him. I remember reading in Dio that Sporus had a person who dressed him and all. And let’s not forget that Suetonius says that Nero took Sporus and made him into a girl (Suetonius, Nero.28) And I think that the role of a woman was forced on him, but that’s my personal thoughts. I don’t think that Sporus was given a chance to think for himself after Nero died. I think there is a LOT more to Sporus than we know because the thing that I feel a lot of people tend to forget is that these all were REAL people. I personally think that Sporus was a very strong person and should have more attention paid to him. On another note, Vietellius is an interesting person as well. He’s my favourite of the year of 4 emperors. Now, I want to ask you about another possible relationship. What do you think of Otho? I suspect that Nero went out with him, but that’s all personal speculation. Just because what Suetonius says that he and Nero were 'birds of a feather’ (Suetonius. Otho. 2) Also, Poppaea was his wife and all. I mean, Gaius slept with both Drusilla and her husband- so, I am thinking that it is highly possible that Nero and Otho were a thing. -- source link
