dragonnan:sherlockedcarmilla:I love them ❤❤The moment by moment of this gifset really captures exactly how Sherlock is sorta bracing for that verbal blow. He’s so sadly used to it, now, but that doesn’t stop him setting his mouth in a tight line and looking away. For John - his encouragement and praise is a casual thing. He’s had friends before - I like to think he was probably close to the soldiers in Afghanistan. Likely quite good friendships seeing as he was a military doctor and a guy potentially saving your life is someone other people want to be friends with. So John doesn’t have a life experience of being beaten down like that (outside of the sorta accepted fanon that John’s father was an abuse bastard). So, like I say, John doesn’t appear to think anything of praising Sherlock’s genius. And afterward, when Sherlock tells him what people “usually say” John laughs freely - openly. But notice Sherlock. He smiles - but it’s a tight smile - I’d even argue that it’s wary. And it rapidly retreats back to that tight lipped expression again. This is especially noticeable held up against the end of the Pilot when they both giggle together “at a crime scene”. I think it took until then for Sherlock to finally let down his walls - to finally accept that John was a rare example of a person who wouldn’t actually hurt him just for being who he is. -- source link
