Rare Group of 14 Agatized Fossil Ferns PlaquesOsmundacaulis tasmaniensis and Osmundacaulis griggsiiJurassic, 180 million years oldLune River, TasmaniaThese agatized fossil tree fern polished plaques originate from the Lune River area about 120 kilometers south of Hobart, Tasmania. Approximately 180 million years ago the vegetation was flattened by flow from a nearby volcano which was then later followed by a 1km thick basalt and dolerite flow which covered the plants with silica then replacing the carbon in the plant. Perfectly preserved stems of wood, fern and cycad resulted. via: Bonhams -- source link
