QUEEN SYLVIA EMBRYThe future blues singer and bassist was born Sylvia Lee Barton in Arkansas in 1941. Her grandmother taught her the piano when she was younger, a strict arrangement.“She demanded I play gospel,” Embry once said, “and I wanted to play a little boogie-woogie. I was crazy about Chuck Berry and Lloyd Price.”When she was 19, she took off to Memphis to start her music career and played for the Southern Echoes Gospel group. She later went to Chicago, where she met and married Johnny Embry, who taught her how to play bass. She played in several other bands and later recorded a handful of albums. -- source link
