Iran-Iraq Wargeorgy-konstantinovich-zhukov:In the midst of the war, the Iranian clerics made the finishing move on their takeover. President Abol Hassan Bani Sadr, who also served as Commander-in-Chief, had been fervently anti-Shah, but didn’t see eye to eye with the religious regime and hoped to maintain a semblance of democracy in the new Iran. In June of 1981, the Islamists moved to impeach him, and banned membership of all other political parties. Much of the blame for the early failures were blamed on Sadr. Sadr fled and was forced into hiding while his associates who remained were executed. After a vain plea for a referendum on Iran’s future - rejected with the Ayatollah’s remark that his vote was more important then the other 36 million - he fled to exile in France. -- source link
