gunpowderandspark: I’m seeing a thinkpiece on why Jessica Jones will beat Supergirl and, like… *Grabs Megaphone* Women are not subject to the rules of Highlander! There can be more than one female-led superhero show! They can serve different demographics and interests! Stop pitting all women against each other in some sick, subtly sexist Battle Royale! *puts down Megaphone*…*picks up Megaphone* Did anyone lose a Megaphone? I found this one and it has the name Brittany on it but I’m not Brittany, so like… This article is, um, 100% total bullshit. Written by someone who doesn’t understand television. At all. New, prime time, network, scripted television shows are renewed or canceled based on a single metric: Nielsen ratings. That’s all the advertisers care about, so that’s all the networks care about. (In later seasons other things matter, like the production budget, # of episodes to syndication, cast contracts get renegotiated after 7 seasons, etc.)Supergirl is the 2nd highest rated new show on CBS this season. It’s not going anywhere. It was practically a lock for renewal after like the 3rd week or something. Jessica Jones had fuck all to do with anything. Networks don’t see individual Netflix shows as competition (Netflix as an industry disrupter is different.) Network shows don’t even really compete with shows on other networks, more other shows on their own network. You just don’t want to come in last on your network. Supergirl is the 4th highest rated show overall on CBS. If they canceled it, they’d be canceling EVERY OTHER SHOW on the network except Big Bang, NCIS, and Life in Pieces along with it. Keep watching Supergirl, but don’t lose sleep over it. The author of this article knows less than Jon Snow. -- source link
